Surf’s Up – A Cinematic Masterpiece

Congratulations dear reader, you’ve stumbled across an opinion piece!

Now I kindly ask you to grab your copies of Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather I and II, along with your Shawshank Redemption VCR and Schindler’s List Blue Ray disk, and gently place them aside. There is a time for these classics, but that time is not now. For now, you must wax up your surfboard (or coffee table, if there is no nearby board), slip on some boardshorts and position yourself in front of any film-playing device. All there is to do now is to allow your mind and body to surrender into a state of gentle awareness. Allow your funny bone to be tickled and shakras to be aligned, as over the next 1h 25m, you transcend to a space of pure inner peace and utter stoke.

Surf’s Up is genuinely my favourite film of all time. I know there are deeper films, cleverer films, films with more layers… But in terms of eliciting an emotional reaction, I can’t think of any films that necessarily surpasses Surf’s Up. Whenever I watch this shred-tastic masterpiece, I genuinely feel a deep sense of inner peace. Ahhh… I breathe. Everything is going to be okay. Everything is okay. Life is good.

The JPM (jokes per minute) is way up there with the likes of Dodgeball, and the story just flows baby. Then there is the big bloody beautiful beating heart at the centre of this movie. These freekin penguins (and chicken) seem to get what it’s all about. Getting out in nature and just soaking it all in with your mates. Add in a will-they won’t-they romance dynamic between our boy Cody and Penguin Lifeguard Babe Lani… Are you kidding me!?

I could go on for hours about this.. But for you imaginary reader, I would simply recommend watching the movie. It is both more entertaining and shorter than my writings on the subject.
